A Timeline of Craft & Legacy

From post-war Worthing to the present day, every chapter of the Swandean story.

1948 – The Foundation

The DNA of 101 St James’s Street

Long before the Cresswells first sharpened a knife behind its counter, 101 St James’s Street had already earned its place in Brighton’s history as a historic butcher’s site. The building itself carried the pedigree, a trading address already steeped in the craft of quality meats.

The post-war community of Worthing was rebuilding. Families were making do. And at this particular address, the quiet story of a business that would go on to outlast rationing, recessions, and a pandemic was just beginning to take shape.

The address itself was ready long before the name that would make it famous.

1954 – 1981: The Founders

Horace, Ruby & Roy Cresswell

Rationing ended in July 1954. By September, the Cresswells had incorporated Swandean Fresh Meats and opened the shop on St James’s Street, living above it.

Horace and Roy built the brand on quality English meats and honest service. Horace passed in 1980; Roy in 1981, but the culture they created never left.

1976 – 2015: Steady Hands

Jack Croft

By July 1976, the business was trading as Swandean Fresh Meats, its name taken from the Swandean Isolation Hospital in Worthing, and Jack Croft was at the helm. Horace and Roy Cresswell were both still involved at this point, passing in 1980 and 1981 respectively, so Jack learned the business alongside its founders and carried their standards forward rather than replacing them.

Jack held the helm for over 30 years. The supermarket boom of the 1980s and 90s changed everything for high-street butchers, yet he navigated the shift with calculated steadiness, moving the business fully to Worthing and pivoting to serve the wholesale and trade market.

2020 – 2024: Tested & Proven

Adapting Through Change

The early 2020s tested every food business in the country. Swandean tightened its focus, leaned on core wholesale relationships, and let the values built in 1954 do their job.

2025 – Present: The Turnaround

Dudley & The Team:
A Return to Roots

In 2025, Dudley and the team brought renewed focus and a clear sense of purpose: strip back the noise and return to what Swandean has always done best. It’s a full-circle moment, reconnecting the present business to its founding spirit.

The original 1954 spirit, quality English meats, family integrity, and genuine local service, is being rebuilt from the ground up. Every delivery, every relationship with a supplier, every call answered before dawn is a deliberate act of heritage preservation.

2026 & Beyond

The Story Isn’t Finished.
And Neither Are We.

The same values that drove Horace to open those doors in 1954 are the values that drive the team today. A six-day delivery service. Same-day options. A buying team that never compromises on quality or traceability. And a direct line to the people who answer the phone before the rest of Sussex is awake.

The next chapter is being written in real time, by every customer who trusts us with their order, every farmer whose standards we demand, and every team member who shows up in the early hours because they believe the story matters.
